Description
The Super Tuscans
It is time to share some more great wine. This time I keen to look at some more of Italy’s best work. Since their release, the Super Tuscan wines have represented some of the best wines in Italy and the whole world. The term “Super Tuscan” was coined to define the new wave of wines from Tuscany. Rebelling against the constrictive laws of the time, these wine makers moved away from the ‘boring’ to make thrilling and iconic wines that we still enjoy today. They use grapes like Cabernet, Syrah, and Merlot, sometimes blended with their native Sangiovese to make wines that rival Bordeaux, Barolo, and Napa Valley for power, intensity and aging potential. Not to mention price!
This is your chance to try some of these world beating wines. We’ll taste 5 Super Tuscan wines from classics to modern takes and for palate calibration we’ll also enjoy one of the best Chianti Classico wines on the market.
The Wines
Isole e Olena Chianti Classico DOCG 2015 – This is always a favourite of mine. Sangiovese dominant. Light, red cherry, earth and leather. Classic flavours and so easy to drink.
Isole e Olena Cepparello Tuscan IGT 2011 – Unusual that it is 100% Sangiovese. Big tannins, super dry and in need of a lot of time to show its best. This is one of my favourite Super Tuscan wines.
Petrolo Galatrona 2015 – One of the few 100% Merlot wines that can wow you. Red fruits, Sweet herbs, earthy, spice. full-bodied palate which is grippy, and drying. This may be the wine of the night.
Ampeleia Ampeleia Maremma 2015 -Predominantly Cabernet Franc (60%) with 25% Sangiovese. This is a pretty wine, fragrant, stony, dark fruited and inviting. The palate is juicy and light but with serious flavour.
Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2014 – Ripe and fleshy Cabernet with a tannic backbone to balance the wine. The finish is composed and refreshingly aromatic. This is modern and engaging.
Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Ornellaia DOC Bolgheri DOC 2007 – Every inch Italian wine royalty. This will be worth the price of admission alone. It could easily outclass many Bordeaux Chateaux.
