What I know is that chatting about winter wines for an evening is my endless summer. So let us toast winter and embrace the brilliance of the season.

Hail to those of you who drink in the seasons. Winter isn’t so bad if you embrace it rather than reject it, pining for the warm days. And what would you do with an endless summer anyway? Complain?

Worse still, you’d never find a time to drink the great winter wines of the world. Full bodied, oozing with flavour, brimming with vitality and richly seeping to every corner of your mouth.

Winter stews, roast meats, bold flavours. An epic Clash of the Titans. Shiraz vs beef, Cabernet vs lamb. The struggle is eternal. Who is the winner? Why, you are of course.

But what else is there in the Pantheon of winter reds?

Surely people worship at the altar of Aglianico, the God of tannin. And Nebbiolo, the androgynous God, looking both like Pinot and with Cabernet like features too. What of Malbec, the God of balance and harmony?

Then there is cheese.

There is always cheese.

I implore you to travel North for the Winter.

To the tropics of Melbourne; Brunswick East. And there in the cellar at ReWine, we’ll revel in the glory of winter. We will be full of life, soaking up the warmth of kinship. The spark being wine, the tinder being food and the resulting fire can sustain you through the worst winter on record.

What does this really mean?

This coming Thursday 19th July

We will meet at ReWine 522 Lygon St Brunswick East

at 6.30pm-9.30pm

to taste through some of the best winter wines you’re ever going to see. We’ll have some classic Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. And some less than classics.

ReWine Reserve Shiraz Gundagai 2015 – The Southern parts of NSW are under exploited for making great cool climate reds. Get in before they are discovered.
ReWine Cabernet Sauvignon Yarra Valley 2017 – Cool climate Cabernet at its best. Great intensity and length.
G.D Vajra Langhe Rosso Piedmont 2015 – A blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Pinot Nero. I’ll bring a second bottle, its so good.
Pipoli Aglianico Zero Sulphur Vulture DOC 2014 – Aglianico is the Barolo of Southern Italy. It is delicious.
Du Cedre Heritage Cahors 2015 – Malbec from South of Bordeaux. Why drink dodgy, cheap Bordeaux when you can have this?

ReWine will supply some cheese because hospitality is what makes the world go around. And like any good host, Marshall and Hugo would never let us go hungry after making the effort to visit.

The goal here is to drink great wine of course.

But also to share it with people with common interest. How many friendships have started over a glass of wine? Or perhaps how many didn’t due to a lack of wine?

In any event, time is short and you need to make your decision now. Do you dare miss out? The rewards are great for those that make the journey.

What I know is that chatting about winter wines for an evening is my endless summer.
