Hop Nation’s Jedi Juice is arguably the best New England India Pale Ale (NEIPA) in Australia. If you don’t believe me, you have to try this batch! It is hazy in appearance. rich of flavour, tasting of mango, and a bit like a breakfast juice. It is complex and silky in the mouth. Jedi Juice is a real pleasure to drink. At 7.1% it is on the boozy side, so best to sip not smash.
Hop Nation is the work of two former winemakers (they saw the light and do that as well now). Having consulted to a craft beer shop for a few months I discovered these beers are some of the best in Australia. Well crafted (get it!) and therefore easy to drink beers that are leading examples of their style. As the name would suggest, Hop Nation exists to show off the hoppier styles of beer.
New England India Pale Ale or Hazy India Pale Ale. NEIPA is basically an aggressively hopped, unfiltered IPA. And they have taken over the world. Ultimately the brewer is making you a beer that is hazy, juicy, fruity and floral. Malt flavours and bitterness are not the goals here. The haze which can be slight or almost like greeny/orange mud comes with many techniques: Dry-hopping, high-protein grains (flours, flaked oats, wheat), yeast strains, water chemistry, CO2 levels.
India Pale Ale or IPA started in England. They were essentially a Pale Ale with more. More hops, more bitterness, more malt and more alcohol. Like the English style Pale Ale, they were dry, malty, and cleansing. Now, IPA is a launching pad into pandora’s box wrapped in an enigma and somethings also wrapped in pancetta. American style IPA often focus on hops flavours and sometimes alcohol. But really, the only limit to IPA is the brewer’s imagination.
