The Huber Winery is situated in the region of Baden and specifically the town of Malterdingen. It is the deep South –West of Germany, located on the foothills of the Black Forest mountains between Strasbourg in the French Alsace Region and the city Basel in Switzerland. Huber have approximately 25 ha which is about two thirds Pinot Noir. The first documented use of Pinot Noir is in 1285 where the lovely Cistercian monks brought the Pinot Noir tradition from Burgundy. That is 700 years of practice to get it right and tasting through the Huber range you can see they’ve gotten the most out of it. From entry level to single Cru wines they are spectacular! And their Pinot Blanc is the best I’ve tasted.
These are relatively young vines but the characters of the wine are seriously dense and of the earth. Red fruits and spice sits on top of the mineral core. This is tightly bound and needs a lot of time.
Baden – The Cistercian Monks brought Pinot to this region over 700 years ago. The climate and soils complete with limestone matched the Burgundian Terroir and the Pinot Noir or Spatburgunder can make some seriously great wines that will rival Burgundy.
Pinot Noir – This is the most elusive grape. It is relatively early ripening and extremely sensitive to terroir. Its perfect place on earth is the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. So haunting are great red Burgundy’s charms that growers everywhere try to emulate them. Pinot Noir is not just a one trick pony, it can make great reds, rosé, sparkling and even sweet wines, whites on occasion and I’ve tasted a decent fortified Pinot Noir too.
