Description

Glenfion Canyonleigh Syrah is a savoury, spicy, mineral wine of great character. Showing classic cool climate notes of florals, white pepper and dark berries. There is also bacon fat, graphite, dry herbs. The palate is dark, mid-weight, savoury and brooding. There is nice acid and soft tannin. Drink it now(ish).

GlenFion is a family-owned and operated vineyard at Canyonleigh on the eastern fringe of the Southern Tablelands. Their dry-grown vineyard is situated on an old glacier. The fruit is gently crushed to retain many whole berries and fully destemmed, the fruit goes through extended maceration and fermentation. Pigeage is carried out by hand, avoiding pumps wherever possible. Half of the wine is aged in two-year-old French oak using a mix of coopers to add further dimension to the wine. The other half is stored in stainless steel to retain fresh fruit characters. The wine is then matured in bottle for a minimum of 24 months prior to release to ensure integration and balance.

Shiraz/Syrah

A bit of a chameleon, Shiraz can change how it looks depending on the terroir and/or winemaker influence. The Syrah-based wines of Northern Rhone are dry and austere, while the Shiraz of Barossa is rich and fleshy. A variety that lends itself to long aging but can be drunk at any time of its evolution.
