Description
The Del Plata Crios wines are the innovative, fruit forward styles. This Tannat has 5 years bottle age and undoubtedly are all the better for it. When first opened it looks a little flat, but sitting in the glass all the perfume and fruits pop out and it is a happy moment. Dark fruits, earth and leather, currants and spices. It is dry and savoury with a good weight in the mouth. Not all that tannic, which is surprising for a Tannat. Overall it is a lovely drink, which is very Tannat. Pair it with honey ham to get some pop. Drink over the next 3 years.
Susana Balbo started Dominio Del Plata in 1999. Susana is possibly the greatest winemaker is Argentina having worked at many great estates and set a lot of trends. From this estate they craft four labels of their own. Each wine reflects an aspect of tradition, innovation, terroir or barrel selection. The wines are all amazing and well put together. Best of all, they offer great quality for price and an insight into the best of Argentine wine.
Mendoza
Without question the jewel in the crown of Argentina. A large region. Lots of young and innovative producers have moved in and are slowly mapping out sub-regions and single vineyards of note. Lots of experimentation means you can find all sorts of wonderful wines including the flagship Malbec.
Tannat
A thick skinned red grape high in potent anti-oxidents. It makes darkly coloured wines with monstrous tannins but with underlying depth and complexity. Madiran is obviously Tannat’s happy place judging by the wines. You’re looking for flavours of red, blue and black berries, earth, pepper. Floral notes, dense and silky mouthfeel. Oak is often a flavouring and structural character in the wine too. These wines last for ever. You just need a good cellar.
