Description
How much do you know about Austrian wine? How often do you get to sit and talk with a Master of Wine during an intimate dinner? A dinner at one of the best new restaurants in Melbourne no less!
Since Austrian wine is awesome more people should know of its charms and complexity. Rather than me tell you, Roman Horvath MW from Domane Wachau is coming to Melbourne. Roman is going to sit down with us so we can talk about his work and the quality factors that make the Wachau one of the greatest regions in the world.
Domane Wachau
One of the leading co-operative wineries in the world. Rather staggering is the fact they exploit 30 percent of the entire Wachau vineyard area. Rather than churning out bulk wine they use close to 440 hectares of vineyards to make beautiful Austrian wine. As a result of this resource of grapes, all grown on steep terraces reinforced by old dry stone walled vineyards, they can afford to carefully choose what makes it into the bottle. Famous names like Achleiten, Kollmitz, Loibenberg and Tausend-Eimer-Berg are all produced. Almost all of their production is Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, for good reason too.
Roman Horvath MW Winery Director
Concentrated Grüner Veltliners from Kellerberg are his favourite wines, but Roman also appreciates elegant white Burgundies. Before making his home in the Wachau, he worked in wine trade as well as wineries in Chile and France. He was the second Austrian to successfully complete the prestigious Master of Wine. Roman joined the Domäne Wachau as Winery Director in 2004. He has been responsible for the successful quality-oriented restructuring and strategic positioning of the winery.
