The Brackenwood Adelaide Hills Syrah is remarkably straight forward for a winery that deals in some unusual but delicious wines. Rich in dark fruits with white pepper and anise. The palate is succulent and remarkably soft. This wine is ready to drink now. Enjoy it with something gamey.
After stints as Sommelier in Adelaide and London, Damon Nagel came back to South Australia and purchased a property in the Adelaide Hills the became the Brackenwood vineyard. Located within the Hope Forest, nestled high in the sub-region of Kuitpo. The property is in the most southern section of the Hills. And was once a deer farm. The Vineyard is biodynamic and all fruit is Estate grown.
This is a big and varied region. Stretching from the top of the McLaren Vale all the way to the bottom of the Barossa. This means there is a big scope for climatic conditions. In the central part where its altitude is quite high you can get some of the best sites in the world for Sparkling wine. In the slightly warmer parts of the centre, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme with Riesling, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc worthy of honourable mentions.
A bit of a chameleon, Shiraz can change how it looks depending on terroir and/or wine maker influence. The Syrah based wines of Northern Rhone are dry and austere while the Shiraz of Barossa is rich and fleshy. Long aging is definitely on the cards with Shiraz. But it equally lends itself to drinking at any time of its evolution.
