Balthasar Ress own 5,6 ha of this 52,1 ha site based in their home town of Hattenheim. The site is relatively long and slopes toward the west, thereby protecting it (in German, “schützen”) from cold easterly winds. Because the soils are deep, they are able to store considerable water reserves.
This vineyard often provides the raw materials to make this light and fruity wine. Nice and ripe it shows apricot, lime, chalk and pepper. The palate have a fresh burst of sweetness at the front but the tangy acid makes for a dry finish with a hint of phenolic bite. This would be great with san choy bau. Drink now until 2022.
A famous Rheingau wine estate founded in 1870. Now the Ress family have an enviable 46 hectares of vineyards throughout the amazing Rheingau. The estate is 90% Riesling with Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). Dry or sweet, Riesling or other, only great wines are made here. They are unmissable.
Rheingau – Producing Only 3% of Germany’s wine overall, this is a high quality region making some of the greatest dry Riesling of German and the world. Compared to the precipitous slopes of the Mosel the Rheingau is quite gentle in its aspect and the Rhine River has a moderating effect on the microclimate in the vineyards.
Riesling – One of the world’s most noble varieties and known transmitter of terroir. Riesling is an important variety for quality wine production although only makes up approximately 4% of the planted area. Wonderful wines are found in Germany, Austria, Alsace and Australia. They can be as dry as any wine you’ll taste or super sweet and luscious. It is a wonderful grape. See more about Riesling here.
Kabinett – This translates as gently sweet or fruity. These wines are generally low in alcohol with a power of acidity that is balanced by residual sugar. The best wines will seem almost dry and finish savoury and display a bouquet of beautiful ripe Riesling characters.
