It is clear to see that Roland Velich is a truly driven individual – and the journey he is on is to put terroir expressive Blaufränkisch on the world stage. He’s well on the way! Making entry level, estate and single vineyard Alte Reben (old vine) blends show the range and quality of Blaufrankisch.
Blaufrankisch offers a step up in weight and intensity compared to St Laurent. This village level wine was full of sweet fruits, plums, hint of prune and currants. Although very primary there is a lot of depth and glimpses of savoury notes. The palate is full but not heavy and there is a nice perfume that carries through the wine.
Burgenland – ‘Powerful wines from the land of Sunshine’. The large 13,840ha area of Burgenland on the Eastern border offers a great diversity of wine styles. Neusiedlersee in the north is the home of Zweigelt. Mittelburgenland is where Blaufrankisch finds a natural home.
Blaufrankisch – One of the top quality red varieties of Austria grown mainly in Burgenland. The wines are dark, earthy, dense, tannic and acidic.
