Description
Mitchell Clare Valley Semillon 2016 is a lovely wine. It differs from the classic Hunter style from the first sniff. It is generous, citrus and almost marmalade like. It is floral, rich and inviting. The nose to me is reminiscent of botrytis. But the palate is dry, rich, unctuous with a zingy acid to keep it all fresh and moreish. Mitchell Clare Valley Semillon is pretty handy to drink now. Like most Semillon, it will evolve further and become more savoury and toasty. Pair it with a roast chicken to marry the richness and savoury elements.
Since 1975 the Mitchell family property has been making world-class wines. They outwardly appear rugged and old school. But the wines possess charm and character too. The wines are definitely made with a thought to improving with age too.
Clare Valley
One of the great wine regions of Australia. Known for its boney, citric Rieslings that build flesh with bottle age – a classic Australian style. It can also make some lovely Shiraz and Cabernet.
Semillon
A somewhat shy variety that is most famous for balancing Sauvignon Blanc’s overt tendencies in table wines and sauternes styles. It found a home in the Hunter where the early picked wines can live for 50 years.
