Mas Del Perie Les Escures Cahors 2015

Fresh and charming Cahors. A good one for drinking young.

Out of stock

From Fabien’s cuvees de terroir. The grapes are sourced off 25 year old vines on 10 hectares of clay and limestone at 350 metres. Brilliant colour, a deep purple. This is the lightest, most fresh and more in the red fruits and floral camp with a hint of pepper.  That is not to say it doesn’t have the meaty, earthy, stony quality of great Cahors. But it does mean it is open to drinking younger. This is great wine for charcuterie. Drink over the next 5 years.

When confronted with the choice of studying Medicine and losing the family vineyards or sticking around Fabien made a great choice (for us) and studied viticulture at Bordeaux instead. Switching the family estate to Organic and Biodynamic certification. Using modern common-sense with old school know how, he crafts charming and engaging wines that will benefit from aging but really make you want to drink them now.

Cahors – A red only region that has two distinct terroirs but each shares a high amount of ironstone in the soils. Malbec makes up no less than 70% of the blend ably supported by Merlot and Tannat (amongst others). The best wines are dark, mineral, textural and structured with a good ability to improve with time in the cellar.

Malbec – Native to South West France, Malbec is a minor player in Bordeaux due to fickle performance. The major grape in the under-appreciated, charmingly rugged Black wines of Cahors where it is also known as Cot and Auxerrois.. It has long been the star of Argentina. It makes wines that are intense, tannic, dark fruited with nice acidity. Perfect match for a country that consumes a lot of meat.
