Description

Mac Forbes grew up in the Yarra Valley but set off to see the wine making world. Working in France, Italy, Australia, Portugal and Mount Mary in the Yarra. In 2004 when he returned home he was convinced that Australia was capable of making sub-regional and site specific wines and that, with a bit of hard work, the humble Yarra Valley could be making some amazing terroir driven wines. We don’t have the benefit of bored Cistercian monks, but we do have Mac.

In the search for perfect site expression Mac is not scared to push boundaries and experiment. Mostly he uses Pinot Noir to do a tour of Upper and Lower Yarra sub regions. What comes through is the diversity of styles within a concentrated area, also that Mac is a pretty darn good winemaker who is refining his craft and improving all the time.

A great example of Mac’s ability with Riesling. This is citrus, dry and clean with some silky, fleshy mouthfeel and a stunning perfume that runs through the core of the wine. I get the suspicious that these wines will last for a long time in a good cellar.

Strathbogie Ranges

Granite soils, high elevation and a cool climate means this part of Victoria is capable of making some stunning wines. In particular, Germanic styled Riesling seems a standout but with more work going into site selection there is a lot of potential here.

Riesling

One of the world’s most noble varieties and known transmitter of terroir. Riesling is an important variety for quality wine production although only makes up approximately 4% of the planted area. Wonderful wines are found in Germany, Austria, Alsace and Australia. They can be as dry as any wine you’ll taste or super sweet and luscious. It is a wonderful grape. See more about Riesling here.
