A Swiss chemist and his wife attempted self sufficient living and ended up making lovely wines in Australia’s wonderful Clare Valley. The first release was 1992 and they just got better as time went on. Their son is now in charge of the wines and adopted the hands off approach while keeping the trademark generosity of flavour. Delicious.
It’s Clare Riesling but not quite as we know it. Skin contact, Chardonnay yeasts, lees contact. All in an attempt to add texture and depth to the classic style of the Clare. You get all the lemon and lime with white stones plus an added element of texture and depth. The silkiness of this wine is so lovely and to be commended. Oh and the value is outstanding. Drink with stuffed zucchini flowers. Like all the Clare Rieslings it will no doubt age gracefully. It’s pretty yum now though…
Clare Valley – One of the great wine regions of Australia. Known for its boney, citric Rieslings that build flesh with bottle age – a classic Australian style. It can also make some lovely Shiraz and Cabernet.
Riesling – One of the world’s most noble varieties and known transmitter of terroir. Riesling is an important variety for quality wine production although only makes up approximately 4% of the planted area. Wonderful wines are found in Germany, Austria, Alsace and Australia. They can be as dry as any wine you’ll taste or super sweet and luscious. It is a wonderful grape. See more about Riesling here.
