Description
Crawford River Riesling – made with love and care near Portland in Western Victoria. If these guys aren’t making Australia’s best Riesling producers then they are a close second. Plantings initial took place in 1975 and therefore form the basis for wines that are consistently great and live for a very long time in a good cellar. A tight core of powerfully dense and ripe fruit is bound in a mineral and acid/phenolic structure. It is well worth tasting these wines even if you aren’t looking to create a cellar. 2008 was a stunning year for Crawford River that even yielded a Reserve Riesling! Crawford River Riesling Reserve 2008 will be amazing drinking now, but you don’t need to rush.
Henty
A large appellation in South Western Victoria that has produced some of Australia’s greatest Rieslings. Mixed results with Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet, Chardonnay and more have meant that it does not really rate on a lot of people’s wine radar.
Riesling
One of the world’s most noble varieties and known transmitter of terroir. Riesling is an important variety for quality wine production although only makes up approximately 4% of the planted area. Wonderful wines are found in Germany, Austria, Alsace and Australia. They can be as dry as any wine you’ll taste or super sweet and luscious. It is a wonderful grape. See more about Riesling here.
