A beautiful collection of old, high altitude, goblet trained, organically grown plots in Bierzo are the key to the quality of Mengoba’s wines. Two levels of estate wine then single vineyard releases really capture the essence of the region. Both reds from Mencia and whites from Gordello and Dona Blanco are seriously impressive.
From a single site that is 80 years old and so high up and rocky that the plough is cattle drawn rather than a tractor. This is classic Mencia with delicate crushed raspberries, rose petals, violets, sappy fruits, fresh herbs and smokey/schist happenings. The palate is rich, dense and silky with plenty of savour, meaty elements to balance out the fresh and aromatic components. This is stunning drinking. Drink now or look in again around 2019
Biezro – Continental climate and high altitude vineyards combined with schist laden soils means these wines are elegant, fine and perfumed. Easily some of the best wines in Spain.
Mencia – Similar to Cabernet Franc it makes stunningly aromatic wines from Bierzo, Valdeorras and surrounding regions. They have perfume, purity and silkiness with the ability to transmit the flavour of the vineyard it is grown in.
