Another region in the Melbourne dress circle. Yarra Valley is just too big to generalise about. The difference between Upper and Lower Yarra can be huge. In fact it is the difference between the ability to ripen some grapes or not. Great wines are made in the Yarra by lots of wineries. You could do worse than only drink the wines of Mount Mary, Yarra Yering, Yeringberg and Wantirna Estate.
The Cabernet family and various blends of the family, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the standouts from a wide range. Some wineries are able to work wonders with Shiraz, especially when blended with Viognier. Sparkling wine can be impressive and so can Rosé.
