Tasmania
Tasmania
The beautiful Island south of the Australian mainland that has carved out a reputation for quality sparkling wine and Pinot Noir. Tasmania with its cooler climate regions and longer growing season make it perfect for aromatic styles of wine. A wealth of quality focused producers have helped lift the status of the whole island.
Regions
Amazingly there is only one: Tasmania. Anyone who has visited or tasted a lot of wines will know there are distinct differences between the Southern regions near Hobart, the Eastern Regions near Freycinet and the Northern regions near Launceston.
Grape Varieties
As stated above, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and the sparkling wines from these grapes are a standout. However Riesling is a huge success story for the whole Island. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and other aromatic whites do well too. Special sites can ripen Shiraz and Cabernet but there are few ‘must try’ examples of these wines.
