Great Southern
The Great Southern wine region is Australia’s largest wine region by area. In the South of Western Australia it is 200 kilometres from east to west and over 100 kilometres from north to south.
Due to sheer distance it is easy to understand that significant variations of terroir exist. In general thought it is the coolest of WA’s viticultural areas. With a similar maritime influenced Mediterranean climate to Margaret River although with slightly less rainfall.
Sub regions
There are five nominated subregions for wine:
- The Porongurups,
- Mount Barker,
- Albany,
- Denmark,
- Frankland River.
Grape varieties
Riesling from Frankland River is a particular stand out for me.
Pinot Noir from Mt Barker is similarly worthy of your attention.
There is also numerous great examples of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Malbec.
