My Great Quality Champagne Discovery

If you were to ask me about quality Champagne, I’d tell you I’m not a fan of Veuve Clicquot (or most of the big houses). I actively avoid Veuve because I’ve always found there are better quality products in the market.

And then I had a glass of Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2008 thrust into my hand on Monday night. You definitely need to know about this wine.

For 12 years I’ve been having dinner with the same group of wine lovers at Matteo’s while drink ridiculously great wine. 99.99% of our first Monday of every second month (Add pics) dinners have started with either Champagne or Great Sparkling wine. Dom, Krug, Larmandier Bernier, Billecart Salmon Rosé (from magnum, delicious!), Pol Roger Vintage, Bellefon have all been universally enjoyed. While I am a fan of 2004 vintage, it seems like 08s Champagnes is definitely out of the box. And the Veuve Clicquot is a standout from the vintage to date.

A bit shy on the nose before vigorous swirling released some serious Pinot Noir fruit, strawberry and bubblegum notes with some chalk and pears. The palate has some fluffy fizz, with a clean, light and long palate. The wine is showing some savoury notes but at the moment it is young and fresh. The 2008 has all of the hallmarks to be an amazing wine hence it will evolve into a seriously good quality Champagne over the long term.

“This is the clear bargain of all the champagnes tasted this year, reflecting the great vintage and the revolution of the vinification by chief winemaker Dominique Demarville. Brioche, nutty oak, and peach blossom all whisper in the spring breeze of the bouquet before the stone and citrus fruits of the vibrant palate rise to a crescendo on the finish.” James Halliday 96 points  www.winecompanion.com.au

“Shimmering green-gold. Easily up several notches from the bottle. Perfect balance of freshness, ripe acidity and complex vinosity to come. Near perfect wine, patina of seasoned spice of subtle oak. Drink: 2020-2025” 96 points Decanter.com

Veuve Cliquot is classic producer that is widely known and loved. In 2008 they have crafted a quality Champagne that will happily live in your cellar for the long term. The 2008 is friendly to wine lovers (snobs like me) and casual drinkers. Most importantly it offers a pleasurable glass of wine.
