Description

Founded in 1870 and still going strong. The Torres family empire is responsible for some of the best Spanish wines we see. Inducted to the Primum Familiae collective, along with Mouton-Rothschild, Antinori, Pol Roger, Hugel and Tenuta San Guido illustrates the esteem in which they are held. This venture into Rioja’s Alavesa sub region started in 2005. Since the first release in 2006 it has become a welcome part of the Torres wine family.

Sourced from Rioja Alavesa, 100% Tempranillo has been aged 12 months in French and America oak then 6 months in bottle to qualify for Crianza level designation. It offers blue berries, plums, prunes, smoke, cherry and pepper. Lovely Temp texture in the mouth with almost gritty tannins and nice length. This is a succulent wine that is drinking well now but a trip to the cellar until 2020 or thereabouts would not be a bad thing.

D.O Rioja

A large and varied region and Spain’s quality flagship. Sub-regions Alta and Alavesa are the high altitude cooler parts that show elegant and almost Burgundian Tempranillo wines. Baja is the low hot lands sub region where Garnacha (Grenache) becomes more important. Producer is the most important determiner of quality as products range from traditional savoury wines to modern silky, pure wines. The whites can be neutral and simple through to pretty and silky affairs.

Tempranillo

Top quality grape grown all over the Peninsula (with many pseudonyms). There are many faces to Tempranillo. A wine maker can use it for Rosado or Joven (released after 6 months) all the way up to Gran Reserva (60 months in the winery). But there is also the amazing ability to age. At the peak of their aging the very best examples are said to compare to Burgundy. Cherry and cola are typical flavours, it has moderate to low acid, moderate tannin and the naturally high pH allows for a silky mouthfeel that is not seen in other red wines.

Crianza

Aging for red wines is a minimum of 2 years with at least 6 months in oak. However, it is only 1 year with at least 6 months in oak for whites and rosés.
