Description

One of the classic Martinborough wineries. Their fortunes have turn further of late with the adoption of Neudorf’s head winemaker. They make a range of wines but Pinot Noir is what they excel at. With 8 vineyards around the terrace they have a lot of options that they exploit to their fullest.

A well-handled Chardonnay that is both ripe and restrained. Ripe exotic fruits like quince and cumquat sit in the glass with limes, pears and white peach. A background of toasty oak and freshly kneaded dough add a savoury element. In the mouth the wine leans towards dryness with lemon peel acid and some tannins from the skins and oak. The fruit sits at the core and will explode with a bit more time in bottle. Drink from 2015 to 2018. I’d match with a baked or steamed firm fleshed white fish.

Martinborough – A sub-region of the Wairarapa region is still relatively new. Really it has only been a commercial site since the early 1980s. Most of the region’s vineyards are concentrated around the town of Martinborough on special soils that are referred to as ‘The Martinborough Terrace’. Low rainfall, large diurnal temperature fluctuations and strong winds all contribute to its unique terroir. They have built a strong reputation for quality Pinot Noir.

Chardonnay – The grape that you can plant anywhere, in any climate and do anything to and it will still taste like an OK wine. When people hit the sweet spot of site, climate, cropping and winemaking, Chardonnay becomes a magical wine that will age gracefully but charm you at any age. Chardonnays can range from cool climate lean and citrusy to warmer climate tropical and overt. Oak and lees can add flavouring as can malolactic fermentation.
