Description

Spinifex is a gem of a producer based in the Barossa Valley. Through share farming and good relationships they have access to some great vineyard sites which they use to craft their wines. There is a strong focus on the sandier soils of the Barossa so they make lighter, more aromatic and elegant wines (by Barossa standards of course). Pete and Magali really craft their wines to reflect a sense of place, have texture and savoury qualities. Whats more the wines age remarkably well if you give them a chance.

Miette is their value brand that lets them experiment, blend out some excess wines and offer you a great deal. This is Vermentino and Viognier with a bit of Roussanne, Marsanne and Ugni Blanc. While they aren’t well known varieties they are all classics from the regions they call home in France. This wine has a great depth of flavour with bubblegum and floral notes. There is a nice mouthfeel and good weight of fruit. This is such an appealing wine to drink.

Barossa Valley

One of the major wine regions or Australia. Known for making great Shiraz by any standard as well as Grenache, Mataro, Semillon and much more. There has been a lot of work finding the sub-regions that excel for each style and variety planted.

Vermentino

An impressive white grape suited to warm coastal regions from Liguria down to Bolgheri and Sardinia. Rich aromatics and great texture. Personally, I think Vermentino is the next big thing. Mainly because it is delicious, but it also grows well in the Australian climate. And it ticks boxes for lovers of Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.

Roussanne

One of the grapes, along with Marsanne, that add texture, structure and sobriety to the Rhone Valley’s ostentatious Viognier. Without their flamboyant partner the wines tend to be rich, understated but very well balanced. In the right hands there is amazing perfume and fruit to be coaxed out.

Viognier

The flamboyantly aromatic white grape that calls Condrieu in the Rhone Valley home. It’s apricot kernel, viscous nature and floral lift make for quite an intense white. However it also adds perfume, fixes colour and generally beautifies lean and boney Shiraz in the Rhone and around the world.
