Description

What a great find. Mazuelo is one component of the great wines of Rioja. Not often do you get to try it as a straight varietal and see what it adds to the blend. The lightness and aromatics of Mazuelo are on display, red currants and cherries followed by graphite, wood, smoke and dry earth. The palate is light, savoury and soft. This wine is ready to drink now with some salumi.

Founded in 1953 by Felix Huarte. It has 210 hectares of vine, distributed  across the 5 sub-regions. Whites, reds and rosato are all produced here with quality being the number one goal.

Navarra DO

Reds and rosato dominate here, although white is growing in popularity. Dating back to 2nd Century BC there is a lot of winemaking history here. The region is not nearly as famous as Rioja or Ribera del Duero and is more notable for value than sheer quality.

Carignan AKA Mazuelo, Cariñena and Samsó.

This is a French variety that is often used as a bit player in a blend, generally it involves Grenache. It’s late ripening can be problematic or a good insurance policy. In a blend it brings dark colour, high acid and tannin.
