Description

Rising Small Batch Red is 56% Shiraz, and 44% Pinot Noir. All hand-harvested and off one block in Christmas Hills. One component of 100% whole bunch carbonic macerated Shiraz. A second component destemmed. The Pinot Noir was destemmed before undergoing whole-berry maceration. Both components were wild ferments. It was pressed and transferred directly to old 500L French oak puncheons to complete fermentation then left to mature. The wine was blended and bottled without filtration or fining at the start of December 2018. Rising Small Batch Red is delicious, red fruits, earthy a little bit floral. Cakey/panettone, stemmy/seeds/marc. On the palate, it is juicy and silky. Gamay like. Super spicy. Sensational wine.  Ready to drink now and would pair well with game or roast chicken. The Rising Vineyard in the Christmas Hills offers rolling hills at nice elevation. Small parcels of exceptional fruit, handled by talented winemakers and the resulting wines are delicious.

Yarra Valley

A region that is just too big to generalise about. The difference between Upper and Lower Yarra can be the ability to ripen some grapes or not. Great wines are made in the Yarra but it is best to know the producers.

Shiraz/Syrah

A bit of a chameleon, Shiraz can change how it looks depending on terroir and/or winemaker influence. The Syrah-based wines of Northern Rhone are dry and austere while the Shiraz of Barossa is rich and fleshy. A variety that lends itself to long aging but can be drunk at any time of its evolution.

Pinot Noir

This is the most elusive grape. It is relatively early ripening and extremely sensitive to terroir. Its perfect place on earth is the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. So haunting are great red Burgundy’s charms that growers everywhere try to emulate them. Pinot Noir is not just a one-trick pony, it can make great reds, rosé, sparkling and even sweet wines, whites on occasion and I’ve tasted a decent fortified Pinot Noir too.
