Description

Ramos Pinto Duas Quintas is an old favourite of mine. I sold it for years and had forgotten about it until someone recently asked for some bigger reds. The wine flashed up on a price list and now I am selling it again. It is a red table wine made from a blend of the classic Port grape varieties Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca with Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta da Barca, Tinta Barroca, Sousão, Tinto Cão, and Tinta Amarela. Duas Quintas means ‘Two Farms(Estates)’ and therefore is a blend of grapes from two of Ramos Pintos four Quintas.

Ramos Pinto Duas Quintas is a big wine, with obvious flavours. Thick, liquorice, smoke, floral, alcohol lift, earth, rubber, spice. The palate shows raisins, fleshy red and black fruits, there is alcohol evident, grippy tannins, it has a big back palate, with a hint of a bitter finish. Ramos Pinto Duas Quintas is drinking well now and will continue to be enjoyable for the next decade.

Brothers Adriano and Antonio founded this house in 1880. Since 1990 it has been part of Champagne Louis Roederer group. Since their inception, they have been innovative. Both with wine production and marketing. But ultimately the wines are fantastic. Part of this is because the house owns 187 hectares of prime vineyards. The holdings consist of 4 Quintas (Estates).

Douro

This is the region where Port is grown and made. But there is also a great deal of beautiful table wine made. The reds and whites are bold but not overly huge and often have a refreshing savoury element to them.

Touriga Varieties

Touriga Nacional is the most desirable for quality Port and table wine but proves difficult to grow and offers small yields. That means the easier to grow Touriga Franca is favoured for less expensive wines. Franca is the Cabernet Franc compared to Nacionals Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of T. Nacional are thick, dense, intensely coloured and full of flavour.

Port Varieties

Touriga Nacional is the most desirable for quality Port but proves difficult to grow and offers small yields. Touriga Franca makes up the greatest percentage of plantings and is the Cabernet Franc compared to Nacionals Cabernet Sauvignon. Tinta Barroca can withstand the cool conditions on the North facing slopes, Tinta Cão offers finesse and complexity and Tinta Roriz aka Tempranillo offers its own perfume and charm.
