Description

Penfold’s was established in 1844. They have been a significant leader in quality wines in Australia and are custodians to Australia’s greatest wine – Grange. They do make a lot of wine these days at varying quality, but their access to fruit across regions and vintages means their top end wines are still leading quality for their styles.

Grange– The wine that should not have been made. But creator Max Schubert knew his American oak dominant, structural monster was going to be great. And he was right. Grange is rightly considered the best wine made in Australia.

1998- An amazing vintage that allowed them to use 97% Shiraz to craft the style. Big flavours, big structure, big alcohol but as it is all big it is all in proportion and most critics feel the wine still has another 10-20 years to improve.

Barossa Valley – One of the major wine regions or Australia. Known for making great Shiraz by any standard as well as Grenache, Mataro, Semillon and much more. There has been a lot of work finding the sub-regions that excel for each style and variety planted.

Shiraz/Syrah – A bit of a chameleon, Shiraz can change how it looks depending on terroir and/or wine maker influence. The Syrah based wines of Northern Rhone are dry and austere while the Shiraz of Barossa is rich and fleshy. A variety that lends itself to long aging but can be drunk at any time of its evolution.
