Description

Zinio Rose is 100% Tempranillo from Rioja. Specially harvested grapes are destemmed, crushed, cold macerated, and cold fermented. This allows for Zinio Rose to show a beautiful pale pink colour, but more importantly, Zinio Rose retains all the freshness of the grapes. Candied lollies, rose petals, citrus. The palate of Zinio Rose is light, and it has lovely acidity, and it is cleansing. Ultimate Zinio Rose is meant to drink and enjoy. It is simple and easy-going, and that is its charm.

Zinio Rose will sit happily on most tables and pair with most meals or just some sunshine.

Started as a co-operative of growers who farmed grapes in the lovely Rioja Alta. They have come a long way since 1986, including adding a lovely method traditionelle Cava from the birthplace of great Cava Penedes.

Bodegas Patrocinio Zinio Rose Rioja 2017 Winery Notes

ZINIO expresses the sheer purity of the grapes of Uruñuela ‐ whose people are known as “Storks.”Based on Tempranillo and Viura, both hallmarks of DOCa Rioja, we have crafted a series of wines that capture the soul of our land. They are characterised by a good selection of grapes, which translate into balanced wines with structure and a strong core of fruit intensity.

D.O Rioja

A large and varied region and Spain’s quality flagship. Sub-regions Alta and Alavesa are the high altitude cooler parts that show elegant and almost Burgundian Tempranillo wines. Baja is the low hot lands sub-region where Garnacha (Grenache) becomes more important. The producer is the most important determiner of quality as producers range from traditional savoury wines to modern silky, pure wines. The whites can be neutral and simple through to pretty and silky affairs.

Tempranillo

A top-quality red grape that grows all over the Iberian Peninsula (with many pseudonyms). It makes Rosado or Joven (released after 6 months) all the way up to Gran Reserva (60 months in the winery). Reserva and Gran Reserva are capable of aging for the long-term (30 years easily). Top examples of aged Tempranillo compare favourably to Burgundy. Cherry and cola are typical flavour descriptors. It has moderate to low acid, moderate tannin and the naturally high pH allows for a silky mouthfeel that is not seen in other red wines.

Spain

Spain is probably more famous for the wines from the hot and dry parts. But the diversity of wine is equal to any country. And Spanish wine is a legitimate threat to the Australian wine market, with their dry-grown, old-vines able to produce the same quality as anything in Australia. If they were allowed to irrigate, they could release more wine at significantly less than any Australian equivalent.

The styles to try as a wine lover include Old school Rioja (leave them for 50 years though, please!). Real Sherry, from Jerez, seriously try this stuff. Mencia from Bierzo and surrounds. Cava – if you thought Prosecco was poor man’s Champagne, well good Cava makes Prosecco taste like Schweppes Mineral Water. And there are more amazing terroir wines across Spain.

Wine

Wine is the result you get from fermented grape juice. There is proof of wine production dating back 8000 years ago. Fashions, innovations and many other factors have influenced the way wine has evolved over the years.

The wine grape is special. It contains everything you need to make grape wine except for the yeast, which lives on the outside of the skins.

Human inputs can influence the final product, including the viticulture (growing) choices. And the winemaker can shape the wine to a point too.

The best wines of the world often refer to terroir. Terroir is a French term that refers to all the climatic, geological and topographical influences on a specific piece of land. And it is true that neighbouring vineyards, grown identically, can taste noticeably different.

Rose Wine

Rose in Europe is like water. It is everywhere, and everyone drinks it. In Australia, Rose has been a second class citizen, often seen as a compromise between white and red. This is not the case at all. Rose is wine style in its own right. It can be still or sparkling. Dry (bone dry!) or sweet. It can be simple or complex. It can be young drinking, or some Rose can age for a long, long time. If you write off Rose, then you are the one missing out.

Rose can be achieved by leaving red grapes on skins for a shorter amount of time. The Saignee (to bled) method sees juice run off the concentrate the liquid to skin ratios. Tache (stain) is a common way to make sparkling Rose, adding a dash of red wine to a white base.

The grape used to make Rose drives the style. Grenache, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo are all classic examples. And as you might imagine, they are all quite different in flavour and structure.

Champagne Rose is a delight; some can taste like Red Burgundy with bubbles. Southern France, especially Bandol, excel at top level Rose. Spanish and Italian Rose are often worth seeking for more casual drinking.
