Description
Up until the adoption of the Appellation Contrôlée system in the 1920s Mont Redon, along with the likes of Château Rayas, was one of the few “Grand Crus” in Châteauneuf du Pape. Since then new owners have taken over and started making use of the diverse range of soils on the 163ha estate to make some equally fascinating Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyards are one of the few to be planted to all 22 grape varieties authorised for use in Châteauneuf du Pape. I’m a huge fan of Mont-Redon for their easy to approach style of Southern Rhones
The next step up from Cotes du Rhone and very much a junior Chateauneuf. The Lirac is soften used to season the new barriques for a year before the Chateauneuf gets to rest in it. In vintages like 2009 the fruit power really goes well with the new oak and you get a lovely balance of flavours and intensity. Made from 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault this is a perfumed and silky red that is attractive now but will reward 5-10 years in the cellar.
