Description

Merite Malbec is amazing. Blackberry, mint, chocolate, vanilla. Rich, full palate with plenty of lovely tannins. It has an immediate impact and just gets better as you let it sit. There is not much more to say, Merite Malbec is a classy wine and if you love Malbec (of course you love Malbec, everyone does) or Cabernet/Cabernet blends then this is your wine. It will improve with time in the bottle. Give it 7-15 years and it’ll be amazing. As a food match, I’d enjoy roast beef.

This wine came about after Colleen and Mike spent four months in Argentina to taste and learn everything they could about growing and making Argentine Malbec. In 2008 they seized the opportunity to plant an experimental parcel of four Argentine Malbec clones on their site. The smaller berries from these clones create wine that is more intense in colour and flavours.

Mike and Colleen’s obsession with Merlot is legendary. After purchasing land in the Wrattonbully district in 2000, eventually, they felt that Merlot might just be the best with they could make. When newer Merlot clones became available in Australia, they set about matching clone and microclimate. The results speak for themselves.

Wrattonbully

One of the most charming wine regions of South Australia. It has the reputation of making big and obvious reds, but there is more to it if you look. A lot of Wrattonbully used to be in Coonawarra until the boundary was redrawn. It has a similar soil composition including the famed Terra Rossa. In addition, the climate is quite similar. Therefore you can find a lot of quality. The Cabernet is muscular and flavoursome, the Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and overtly fruity. The wines tend to offer great value too.

Malbec

A native to South-West France especially in the underappreciated Cahors and a minor player in Bordeaux. It has long been the star of Argentina. Known for making Intense, tannic, dark-fruited wines with nice acidity. Perfect match for a country that consumes a lot of meat.
