Description

Established in 1991 but with a history back to the 1850’s in the Hunter area. Certainly Shiraz and Semillon are the specialties here and a run through the individual vineyard wines shows why, especially if they open the cellar releases.

Named for the great-great-grandfather that planted vines in the 1850’s. The fruit source here is the amazing Braemore vineyard. There is a lot to love about this wine. Released with a few years in bottle to knock off the hard edges and allow some development to show through. Limes, lemon blossom, honeysuckle, lanolin, toast and much more. The palate is textured and rich with driving acid that means there is a lot of life in this wine yet. Drinkable now but really, bury this wine is a time capsule and whoever finds it will honour your memory. Serve it with seared blue eye.

Hunter Valley – Although it is historically very important to Australia. If you were planting Australia today from scratch you’d never even visit the Hunter. Rain almost every harvest and excessive heat mean hard work. But the results in the bottle show each year. Shiraz and Semillon are particular highlights.

Semillon – A somewhat shy variety that is most famous for balancing Sauvignon Blancs overt tendencies in table wines and sauternes styles. It found a home in the Hunter where the early picked wines can live for 50 years.
