Description

Schoenenbourg is the most outstanding terroir in Riquewihr. Steep, south facing at the bottom of a valley with great water retention. This wine is from a warmer year and shows bold, ripe yellow and exotic fruits, bags of schist and whites stones, yellow flowers and a hint of white pepper. As the wine evolves in the glass it changes and more layers are revealed. The palate is fuller than normal but there is still a good amount of acidity. It is drinking now but won’t be falling over any time soon. Match it with a lobster mornay pie.

Domaine Marcel Deiss is a biodynamic family owned estate in Alsace. Their work with field blends and finding the right terroir for the right variety is outstanding. Expect boldly flavoured wines with great mouthfeel and complex flavours.

Alsace – Currently a French territory after coming under German rule twice during the wars the Alsatians tend to think of themselves as being from Alsace first. Their language, culture and wines are all somewhat removed from the rest of the world. For instance, when it comes to aromatic whites no one can compare. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris to name but a few all excel in this cold border region. Some wines can be expensive for the quality but the production quantities mean there are still many bargains to be had.

Alsace Grand Cru – The AOC Grand Cru was created in 1975 and features 51 classified areas, defined according to strict geological and climactic criteria. In 2011, each of these lieux-dits was recognised as an Appellation in its own right The Grands Crus of Alsace represent an average annual production of nearly 45,000 hL (or 500,000 cases), just 4% of the total Alsace wine production

Riesling – One of the world’s most noble varieties and known transmitter of terroir. Riesling is an important variety for quality wine production although only makes up approximately 4% of the planted area. Wonderful wines are found in Germany, Austria, Alsace and Australia. They can be as dry as any wine you’ll taste or super sweet and luscious. It is a wonderful grape. See more about Riesling here.
