La Barroche Liberty Vin de France 2016

La Barroche Liberty is from a site that is almost identical to the Le Crau terroir in Chateauneuf Du Pape. In a year like 2016 it is a mini Chateauneuf.

Description

La Barroche has a special site in the generic Vin de France appellation. But they have a similar terroir to Le Crau in Chateauneuf du Pape. Not only that, but the vines are 50 years old too. Made from 55% Grenache, 18% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre and the rest Cinsault and Carignan. It is a bright, sweet and rounded wine with a hint of aniseed. There are good proportions already and will develop some savoury characters over the next 5-7 years.

Domaine La Barroche is one of the older properties in the Chateauneuf du Pape. Since the 17th Century this Estate has stayed in the ownership one family. Until 1972 the estate was only 2ha and selling their fruit to negociants. By 2003 people began taking notice of the improvements the Estate had been making. Currently they own 15.5 hectares of Chateauneuf du Pape vineyards with an impressive average age of more than 70 years of age. The wines tend to be ripe and powerful which makes them approachable young. But in good years they will evolve in the bottle over the medium term.

Rhone Valley

One of the great wine regions in the world. Situated along the Rhone river in South East France there is a distinct divide between the Syrah dominant North where the Mistral wind cools and regulates the temperature and the hot lands in the South where Grenache is at its peak. The region produces everything from easy going quaffers to wines that demand long term cellaring. Whites can be outstanding such as Viognier made in Condrieu and Rosé makes a fair impression too.

Vin de France

The catch all for wines that are either outside of any recognised appellation OR fail to adhere to the laws of an established appellation. It does not necessarily mean you are getting a cheap or nasty wine. In some cases a winemaker will purposefully ‘declassify’ a wine so they can make it better than if they stayed withing the appellations restricting influence.

Grenache/Garnacha

Spain’s gift to the world. We know it as Grenache and I think everyone has a soft spot for it in some way. Almost too exuberant in expressing its sweet red fruits and high alcohol, it often needs a little bit of other wines to add moderation, structure and depth. Much like Abbott and Costello. Despite this the wines of Priorat, Chateauneuf du Pape, Rioja and Aussie GSMs have an amazing ability to age for the long term.
