Description

Jericho Rose is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir with the balance being Pinot Gris. Its lovely. Jericho Rose is doughy and a hint stinky at first, then settles into the Pinot red berries and undergrowth. The palate of Jericho Rose is fleshy, rich and long. It tastes of tart raspberry, funk and is savoury. Jericho Rose is pleasing to drink and would be a great match to many food styles.

Jericho Rose Adelaide Hills 2021, and all wines are eligible for at least 5% off any six bottles. And 10% off any 12 bottles. Some wines will be at a more significant discount and not subject to further discounts.

Jericho Rose Adelaide Hills 2021 Winery Notes

Four hours on skins to extract soft tannins and pale colours from the skins. Pinot Noir, 70% and 30% Pinot Gris – the Pinot family shows through. Lees contact for 3 months before bottling.

The Pinot Noir vineyard is an outstanding vineyard; on steep slopes, very rocky and north facing. From a tough a small vintage, but with fruit that was there is of high quality.

Adelaide Hills

This is a big and varied region. Basically, it stretches from the top of the McLaren Vale all the way to the bottom of the Barossa. This means there is a big scope for climatic conditions. In the central part, where its altitude is quite high, you can get some of the best sites in the world for Sparkling wine. In the slightly warmer parts of the centre, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme, with Riesling, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc worthy of honourable mentions.

Adelaide Hills

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the most elusive grape. It is relatively early ripening and extremely sensitive to terroir. Its perfect place on earth is the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. So haunting are great red Burgundy’s charms that growers everywhere try to emulate them. Pinot Noir is not just a one-trick pony. Apart from the best reds in the world, you can find world-class Pinot Noir rosé, sparkling. You can even find sweet wines, whites on occasion and I’ve tasted a decent fortified Pinot Noir too.

Pinot Gris/Grigio

Gris and Grigio are, in fact, the same variety, and both names mean grey in French and Italian, respectively, which is somewhat deceptive because the grapes can be almost blue when ripe. The great wines of Alsace and North-Eastern Italy often feature Pinot Grigio. It grows all over the world now too. AKA Grauburgunder in Germany.

Australian Wine

The invasion of “Sunshine in a bottle” put Australian wine on the map.  The fruity, easy-going, somewhat samey wines were endearing for a short time. Then the next big thing knocked them off their perch.

This forced producers to increase quality and emphasise the distinctive terroirs of Australia. Of which, there are many. And many more yet to be discovered.

Australian Wine Map 2

Wine

Wine is the result you get from fermented grape juice. There is proof of wine production dating back 8000 years ago. Fashions, innovations and many other factors have influenced the way wine has evolved over the years.

The wine grape is impressive. It contains everything you need to make grape wine except for the yeast, which lives on the outside of the skins.

Human inputs can influence the final product, including the viticulture (growing) choices. And the winemaker can shape the wine to a point too.

The best wines of the world often refer to terroir. Terroir is a French term that refers to all the climatic, geological and topographical influences on a specific piece of land. And it is true that neighbouring vineyards, grown identically, can taste noticeably different.

Rose Wine

Rose in Europe is like water. It is everywhere, and everyone drinks it. In Australia, Rose has been a second class citizen, often seen as a compromise between white and red. This is not the case at all. Rose is wine style in its own right. It can be still or sparkling. Dry (bone dry!) or sweet. It can be simple or complex. It can be young drinking, or some Rose can age for a long, long time. If you write off Rose, then you are the one missing out.

Rose can be achieved by leaving red grapes on skins for a shorter amount of time. The Saignee (to bled) method sees juice run off the concentrate the liquid to skin ratios. Tache (stain) is a common way to make sparkling Rose, adding a dash of red wine to a white base.

The grape used to make Rose drives the style. Grenache, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo are all classic examples. And as you might imagine, they are all quite different in flavour and structure.

Champagne Rose is a delight; some can taste like Red Burgundy with bubbles. Southern France, especially Bandol, excel at top level Rose. Spanish and Italian Rose are often worth seeking for more casual drinking.
