Description

The top Riesling of Hugel is sourced from the Schoenenbourg Grand Cru which is the most outstanding terroir in Riquewihr. Steep, south facing at the bottom of a valley with great water retention. In 2008 you get a subtle, layered, perfumed and elegant Riesling. White and yellow fruits, white stones and white flowers. The palate has a core of beautiful fruit, lemon acid and a but of pepper. This wine will drink from now until 2028. Pair it with king fish.

Alsatian wine is a bit of a mystery to most people. Like a lot of the wine world it is a matter of finding a producer who is consistent and quality focussed to lead you into the maze. Hugel can do that job admirably. With holdings in some of the most amazing sites of Alsace and a willingness to chase quality above all else the out put of this Estate is something to behold.

Alsace – Currently a French territory after coming under German rule twice during the wars the Alsatians tend to think of themselves as being from Alsace first. Their language, culture and wines are all somewhat removed from the rest of the world. For instance, when it comes to aromatic whites no one can compare. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris to name but a few all excel in this cold border region. Some wines can be expensive for the quality but the production quantities mean there are still many bargains to be had.

Alsace Grand Cru – The AOC Grand Cru was created in 1975 and features 51 classified areas, defined according to strict geological and climactic criteria. In 2011, each of these lieux-dits was recognised as an Appellation in its own right The Grands Crus of Alsace represent an average annual production of nearly 45,000 hL (or 500,000 cases), just 4% of the total Alsace wine production

Riesling – One of the world’s most noble varieties and known transmitter of terroir. Riesling is an important variety for quality wine production although only makes up approximately 4% of the planted area. Wonderful wines are found in Germany, Austria, Alsace and Australia. They can be as dry as any wine you’ll taste or super sweet and luscious. It is a wonderful grape. See more about Riesling here.
