Description

Jeffrey Grosset set the bar for Clare Riesling and no one has ever come close to consistently catching up to his standard. Since 1981 his winery in Auburn, Clare Valley and the man himself have won countless awards and accolades, not least of which was being named as one of Decanters Top 10 White Winemakers. A class act, his wines from other varieties and regions are no less impressive.

What do you expect of a Riesling producers Chardonnay? Jeffrey has harnessed the power of Chardonnay within the bounds of a cool site that allows plenty of acidity and restraint. Lots of primary fruit and hints of oak and a touch of the savoury. It’s a lesson in what Chardonnay in Australia should look like. Pair it with something like spatchcock. There is plenty of suggestion that this wine would evolve and mellow with another 5 to 15 years in bottl.e

Piccadilly Valley – One of the coolest places in the Adelaide Hills and is ideal or growing quality Chardonnay for Sparkling base and table wines.

Adelaide Hills – This is a big and varied region that basically stretches from the top of the McLaren Vale all the way to the bottom of the Barossa. This means there is a big scope for climatic conditions. In the central part where its altitude is quite high you can get some of the best sites in the world for Sparkling wine. In the slightly warmer parts of the centre, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme with Riesling, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc worthy of honourable mentions.

Chardonnay – The grape that you can plant anywhere, in any climate and do anything to and it will still taste like an OK wine. When people hit the sweet spot of site, climate, cropping and winemaking, Chardonnay becomes a magical wine that will age gracefully but charm you at any age. Chardonnays can range from cool climate lean and citrusy to warmer climate tropical and overt. Oak and lees can add flavouring as can malolactic fermentation.
