Description

A five year old Cabernet Franc that is ready to drink. From the appellation Bourgueil which is not a famous as its neighbours so the wines offer great value. The best feature of this wine is that it has the flavour and texture can unite lovers of Cabernet, Shiraz, and Pinot Noir

There is nothing like a person who clearly knows what they want to do. Stephane makes two wines, both are reds from Bourgueil. The vines are aged between 35 and 80 years old and are tended organically. He adds a small amount of sulphur before bottling, otherwise there are no other additions to the wines.

A bit of oak aging separates this Prestige blend from the Domaine blend. This wine is all class, elegant, delicate, perfumed and graceful. There is a lot of flavour derived from the clay and limestone slopes the vines live in. A deft hand has harnessed this and captured the freshness of the red and blue fruits in the bottle. The structure works in harmony to drag the flavours down your palate and make you want another glass. The secret of this wine is that it will age for a couple of decades and only get better.

Service

Guion is good to go from the first pour. Don’t serve it too cold though, you want that plushness to come through.

Food Matches

Will do anything from roast lamb to peking duck. It is kind of delicious on its own too.

Bourgueil

The highly aromatic Cabernet Franc wines from Bourgueil are not as famous as neighbours Chinon or Saumur but the quality is the same if not better. Mineral, lean, structured and pure. These wines will age gracefully for 10-20 years.

Cabernet Franc

Is actually one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon… along with Sauvignon Blanc (oh! The name makes sense now!).  It is most famous for being the third most important grape in quality Bordeaux but also excels in the Loire Valley (where it lived before it went to Bordeaux), especially Chinon and Saumur. The wines are bright red in colour, highlight aromatic with raspberries, rose petals, violets along with tobacco, cassis and some herbal elements. The best examples can live as long as any great wine.
