Description

Domaine De Montille Meursault Les Poruzot is a .63 hectare patch that previously was farmed by Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet. Poruzot refers to rocky soils and this rocky site is right next to Les Genvrieres. By sheer luck, this part of Meursault missed the frosts in 2016. The Whites from this part are amazing.

Domaine De Montille Meursault Les Poruzots Premier Cru 2016 Notes

Moderate reduction and sulfur undertones make the nose tough to assess. Otherwise there is fine volume and density to the tautly muscular flavors that evidence good power and punch on the drier, more complex and longer finish.

Domaine De Montille is now run by the children of iconic winemaker Hubert de Montille. If you watched Mondevino you would know Hubert was the start of the show. If you haven’t, get a great bottle of Burgundy or Bordeaux (or both if you have guests) and set aside an evening. Domaine De Montille wines embody the Volnay spirit (the village where the Domaine is), have the acid drive and focus of the region as well as its pretty aromatics. Every Montille wine is a pleasure to drink. They do look much better with time in the bottle though.

Service

Ideally, you would pull this out in 7 years from vintage. Mildly chill it or put it in a decanter and leave it in the fridge 30-60 mins. Domaine De Montille wines are thrilling and the last sip you have will be the best.

Food Matches

Go decadent for a wine such as this. Crayfish, or crustacea. A fine quality Brie de Meaux.

Burgundy

The classic part of Burgundy known as the Cote D’Or (the slope of gold) is essentially one vineyard that is 60km long and maybe 5km at its widest. From this limestone ridge, some of the most complex, long-lived and aromatic wines produced from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Cistercian monks who owned the land codified the entire region and so each small plot has a name.

Meursault

Traditionally the sturdy, rich, oaky, hazelnutty neighbour of Puligny and Chassagne. A lighter, modern style is evolving, both are equally delicious and charming.

Chardonnay

The grape that you can plant anywhere, in any climate and do anything to and it will still taste like an OK wine. When people hit the sweet spot of site, climate, cropping and winemaking, Chardonnay becomes a magical wine that will age gracefully but charm you at any age. Chardonnays can range from cool-climate lean and citrusy to warmer climate tropical and overt. Oak and lees can add flavouring as can malolactic fermentation.

2016

There was a fair bit of heart-break. We were in Chassagne-Montrachet to taste the morning of the frost. There wasn’t much untouched. But that which survived untouched was outstanding quality.
