Description

Vougeraie Terre de Famile is always a cracking Bourgogne Pinot. In 2009 they knocked it out of the park. This will still be a baby, but a beautiful baby. The purity of Pinot flavours in the bottle is basically a masterclass on what makes the grape variety so amazing.

Vougeraie have been a favourite Burgundy producer of mine, especially at the value end of the scale. Their Bourgogne Rouge is out of this world good for the price. They tend to make dense, silky and aromatic Burgundy that is so well balanced you want to drinking it young. But they do age for the short to mid term too.

Service

This is so young I would just open and serve immediately. Let the wine evolve in your glass and enjoy the journey. Serve at cellar temperature 16 degrees.

Food Matches

All the classic Pinot matches will work. But with the boldness of flavour in this wine I’d happily look at a mature Gouda or a lovely Brie that is not too runny. If you are heading to Burgundy I would go with Abbaye de Citeaux (an bring some back for me please)

Burgundy

Essentially one vineyard that is 60km long and maybe 5km at its widest. From this limestone ridge some of the most complex, long-lived and aromatic wines are produced from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Cistercian monks who owned the land codified the entire region and so each small plot has a name.

Pinot Noir

This is the most elusive grape. It is relatively early ripening and extremely sensitive to terroir. Its perfect place on earth is the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. So haunting are great red Burgundy’s charms that growers everywhere try to emulate them. Pinot Noir is not just a one trick pony, it can make great reds, rosé, sparkling and even sweet wines, whites on occasion and I’ve tasted a decent fortified Pinot Noir too.

2009

My favourite vintage of Burgundy. The vibrancy and purity of expression is so well delivered in the glass. Terroir was more evident than in 2005 and therefore makes it superior in my opinion. I’ll promise you that you cannot drink enough 2009s.
