Description

Roche Paradis Les Vessettes is a field blend of Marsanne and Roussanne. Roche Paradis Les Vessettes is planted in decomposed granitic soil on the slope above the town of Chavanay. Fermented with natural yeasts in barrique with no battonage and bottled after malo to retain the freshness imparted by the granite soils. It is very Marsanne on the nose showing pepper, spice and giving the impression of being boney. The palate is more Roussanne creamy, floral, raspberry, spice, pepper, lemon blossom. Very drinkable, but I believe this is a wine to leave for 7 years.

Yann Menager’s day job for the last 15 years is as vineyard manager for Yves Cuilleron. Yann has used this experience to purchase some superbly sited vineyards. To date, he has acquired holdings of 6.5ha in Saint-Joseph, Condrieu and Côte Rôtie. His winery is on his family’s farm high above St-Joseph. Using hand-picking, low-yields, and native yeast ferments, his wines are lean and elegant, they show the place they are grown more than the winemaker’s hand. They are engaging and delicious.

Rhone Valley

One of the great wine regions in the world. Situated along the Rhone river in South-East France there is a distinct divide between the Syrah dominant North where the Mistral wind cools and regulates the temperature and the hot lands in the South where Grenache is at its peak. The region produces everything from easy-going quaffers to wines that demand long-term cellaring. Whites can be outstanding such as Viognier made in Condrieu and Rosé makes a fair impression too.

Saint-Joseph

The terraced vineyards on the right bank of the Rhone Valley. This appellation is the largest area by land size but second to Crozes in total land under vines. Mostly gutsy reds from Syrah with some Marsanne and/or Roussanne which have a lesser need to age than Hermitage or Cote Rotie. There is also the production of charming whites from Marsanne and/or Roussanne.

Roussanne

One of the grapes, along with Marsanne, that add texture, structure and sobriety to the Rhone Valley’s ostentatious Viognier. Without their flamboyant partner, the wines tend to be rich, understated but with good balance. In the right hands there is amazing perfume and fruit to coax out.

Marsanne

A Rhone Valley variety that offers honeysuckle, florals and a streak of acid. It can be the backbone of a blend that adds its charming characters with age.
