Description

Established in 1965. The Sorgs keep it simple: 100% estate fruit grown sustainably and when the outstanding quality fruit comes in they preserve it rather than try to ‘enhance’ it.

While I keep saying Pinot Blanc doesn’t thrill me, I keep finding beautiful examples. Floral and vibrant, pure stone fruits and chalk. Some mid palate fat and a line of acid make for some harmony on the palate. It is still not an overstated wine, but it sure does have some layers. Don’t serve too cold or you’ll miss the best bits. Drink it over the next 6 to 12 months and enjoy with san choi bao.

Alsace – Currently a French territory after coming under German rule twice during the wars the Alsatians tend to think of themselves as being from Alsace first. Their language, culture and wines are all somewhat removed from the rest of the world. For instance, when it comes to aromatic whites no one can compare. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris to name but a few all excel in this cold border region. Some wines can be expensive for the quality but the production quantities mean there are still many bargains to be had.

Pinot Blanc/Bianco – Its spiritual home is Alsace but these vines have travelled the world. In Alsace it is often blended with the other Pinot family members to make a full bodied, easy drinking white. Generally not as complex as the other Pinots but the best are amazing. AKA Weissburgunder.
