Description

Dog Point Marlborough Pinot Noir is a top-notch, silky and yummy Pinot from one of the best vineyards of New Zealand. Offering you a great alternative to the heavier Central Otago and Martinborough style.

The Dog Point Marlborough vineyard is one of the greatest vineyards I have ever visited. And Dog Point is one of my favourite producers.  They make Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and all of their wines have complexity, texture and vibrancy. I once described their Sauvignon Blanc as life changing because you can buy it, drink it and then want to buy it again.

James Healy and Ivan Sutherland worked together at Cloudy Bay and discovered they shared the same aspirations. That was to be more hands-on and make distinctive wines from Marlborough. Using low cropped, hand-picked, organic grapes sourced from Ivan’s 80 hectare vineyard they launched the Dog Point label. The first release was in 2004 with wines from the 2002 vintage.

Service

You get the best of both worlds here. Able to age gracefully for the short to mid-term you can also drink it right now. Serve at 16 degrees. Give it a bit of air before hand just to allow the perfume to fully develop.

Food Matches

So delicious on its own. It will stand up to some gamey flavours for sure.

Marlborough

The New Zealand region that took over the wine world. Defining the way modern Sauvignon Blanc looked and allowing countless consumers to go anywhere and know they can rely on a glass of Marlborough Sauv Blanc. If you scratch the surface you’ll find a lot of really interesting people and wines.

Pinot Noir

This is the most elusive grape. It is relatively early ripening and extremely sensitive to terroir. Its perfect place on earth is the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. So haunting are great red Burgundy’s charms that growers everywhere try to emulate them. Pinot Noir is not just a one trick pony, it can make great reds, rosé, sparkling and even sweet wines, whites on occasion and I’ve tasted a decent fortified Pinot Noir too.
