Domaine Charvin La Poutet Cotes-du-Rhone 2016

$43.00

The vast majority of Domaine Charvin Cotes du Rhone is Grenache from the cooler, sandy soils. 2016 is a wonderful example of how goods these wines are.

Description

From 21 hectares Domaine Charvin crafts dense, structured but impressive Grenache based wines. 8 hectares in Chateauneuf and 13 in Cotes-du-Rhone with a rather impressive average vine age of 50 years planted on North facing sandy slopes gives Laurent a huge advantage. The high vine age contributes to the density and structure, while the North facing sites are cooler and the sand allows for more elegance and aromatics. Consequently you should really drink these wines.

The vast majority of this wine is Grenache. It is a wine I’ve loved in the past and I do again now. Whole bunches are used to make an aromatically pretty wine with a backbone of firm tannins. I think it needs another 2-3 years to settle down and will drink well for another 10 plus years after that. Buy the magnums for long term storage. You will not regret it.

Cotes-du-Rhone

The generic appellation of the Rhone Valley. It can produce white, rosé or red wines. They are often blends of a few of the local wines. Quality can range from very low to some that rival the best wines the region. Knowing the good producers is the key to picking a good wine from this appellation.

Grenache

AKA Garnacha. Originally a Spanish variety it is known for being aromatic, low in acid with moderate tannin and high in alcohol. Quite often Grenache is blended with other varieties to add structure and tame its exuberance. The top wines of Priorat, Rioja, Chateauneuf du Pape or Barossa can age extremely well.
