Description

The Dubourdieu family acquired purchased Doisy Daene Sauternes in 1924. It was a modest 4 hectares under vine. Today it is 17.8 hectares. Approximately 82% Semillon and 17.6% Sauvignon Blanc, with a tiny section of Muscadelle.

From 2000 Professor Denis Dubourdieu took over the family estate. Denis already a professor of Oenology at Bordeaux University. At the same time, he consulted many Bordeaux estates. Upto 85 at one point. These include: Haut Bailly, Giscours, du Tertre, Carbonnieux, Batailley, Pichon Lalande, La Lagune, and Chateau Margaux for Pavillon Blanc. Add to that Chateau dYquem and Lafaurie-Peyraguey (of which he was a minor shareholder).

Dubourdieu is directly responsible for many vineyard and cellars practices. This has led to increased quality in white, red and sweet Bordeaux. In 2016, Denis Dubourdieu received the distinguished Legion d’Honneur from the French government. In the same year, he was Man of the Year from Decanter magazine.

I love this, the flavors are utterly moreish and mouthfilling, tons of creamy lemon tart, flaky pastry against rich nectarine, tart citrus and lime flavours. Clearly this is a concentrated and gourmet year, but this has delicious balance – excellent quality.
Drinking Window 2022 – 2045

Bordeaux

Situated near the Atlantic coast of France. The Gironde, Dordogne and Garonne rivers provide its shape. Cool conditions and frequent rainfall, including during harvest time, make Bordeaux quite a marginal region with vintages frequently ruined by rain or saved from the rain at the last-minute by timely sunshine.

Sauternes

The undisputed headline act when it comes to sweet wines. Using thin skinned white varieties and having adequet rainfall and humidity in the vineyard means the noble rot botrytis cinerea can take hold and dehydrate the grapes on the vine. Taking away moisture but leaving sugar, acid and flavour behind. The resulting sweet wines are thick, intense and structure. The balance of acid and sugar make these wines able to evolve over many years. The great wines are some of the most expensive in the world.

Semillon

A somewhat shy variety that is most famous for balancing Sauvignon Blanc’s overt tendencies in table wines and sauternes styles. It found a home in the Hunter where the early picked wines can live for 50 years.

2019

This year I got to taste the barrel samples for the first time. And while I don’t think 2019 is the vintage of the century. But is of outstanding quality. 2019 is up there with some of the best in the modern era. What’s more, this is the most affordable great vintage of Bordeaux we’ve seen in many, many years. And if you’ve been as lucky as I have and drunk a fair bit of mature Bordeaux, you will know that the great vintages, like 2019, are always a pleasure to drink.
