The Catena family are pioneers of Mendoza. They have carved out a fine empire based on making quality wines from the region that put Argentina on the wine map.

Made from the best parcels of fruit in the years that warrant it, this is a tribute to the founder of the family empire. Muscular and structured with violets, currants a hint of graphite and a menthol like coolness. Despite the ripeness and power this wine is elegant and controlled, the Malbec really tempers the Cabernet and the outcome is a lovely length of flavour. Drink it after 2018 to see it’s true class. chargrilled steak is the best match.

Mendoza – Without question the jewel in the crown of Argentina. A large region. Lots of young and innovative producers have moved in and are slowly mapping out sub-regions and single vineyards of note. Look out for great Malbec but lots of experimentation means you can find all sorts of wonderful wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon – The noble variety of Bordeaux’s left bank. Firm tannins, a streak of acidity and punctuated by flavours of cassis, violets, spice and leather. The best examples can age for the long term. Although Cabernet does often require blending with Merlot, Cabernet Franc or Shiraz to fix the hole it has in its middle palate.

Malbec – Native to South West France, Malbec is a minor player in Bordeaux and the major grape in the underappreciated Cahors. It has long been the star of Argentina. It makes wines that are intense, tannic, dark fruited with nice acidity. Perfect match for a country that consumes a lot of meat.
