Description

A small vineyard in St Andrews, Yarra Valley tended by the Trist family. It is a labour of love in the vineyard and great fruit is handed over the James Lance (awesome winemaker of Punch and ex Diamond Valley) and made with the help of son Joel Trist. There is a lot of pragmatic decisions made but ultimately the wines across the range are really beautiful to drink.

This wine didn’t offer instant joy out of the bottle like the Pinot Noir. Luckily, they gave me the rest of the bottle to take home and I got to watch it unfold. It was a great experience with the cherries rising to meet tannin and oak. This is pretty authentic tasting Sangiovese all being said. Nice acid, great structure and long flavours. It definitely went much better with food than without. I’d recommend either firm cheese, charcuterie/antipasto or steak. Another 5 years in the cellar would tame the structure a bit.

Yarra Valley – A region that is just too big to generalise about. The difference between Upper and Lower Yarra can be the ability to ripen some grapes or not. Great wines are made in the Yarra but it is best to know the producers.

Sangiovese – Widely cultivated across Italy from Emilia-Romagna to Campania and producing as much wine as Barbera. A wide range of clones and hugely diverse growing conditions sees the variety represent easy drinking ‘quaffers’, all the way to benchmarks such as Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti, Sangiovese di Romagna and Morellino di Scansano.
