Description

Brundlmayer Kamptaler Terrassen is a blend of Kamptal Gruner Veltliner fruit sourced from vineyards on the terraces above the river. The degree of ripeness makes them a lot more attractive now. More tropical and stone fruit is evident, and the chalky/acid backbone is still present but certainly sits under the lovely richness of the palate. Brundlmayer Kamptaler Terrassen will improve with age but doesn’t need it.

Brundlmayer Kamptaler Terrassen Kamptal Gruner Veltliner 2020, and all wines are eligible for at least 5% off any six bottles. And 10% off any 12 bottles. Some wines will be at a more significant discount and not subject to further discounts.

Brundlmayer is arguably the top estate in Austria. However you look at it, this is another one of the world’s top white wine growers. The Kamptal is not far from the Wachau or Kremstal, but it does throw up a whole different terroir/wine style mix. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are still kings; but there are no Federspiel/Smaragd categories, as it’s a different GI. Brundlmayer is situated in Langenlois. The wooded hills of the Waldviertel protect the vineyards from the cold north-westerly winds. During the day, the sun warms the stony terraces, while at night, the fresh, fragrant forest air drifts through the Kamp Valley. Kamptal Gruner Veltliner and Riesling often offer great value when compared to their Wachau neighbours.

The perfect introduction to the Grüner Veltliner grape! Brimming with lime, yellow grapefruit, herbs and fresh cucumber, this is an extremely expressive and very friendly dry white. Lovely balance of on the finely etched, medium-bodied palate with elegant acidity underlining the wide spectrum of flavors. Invigorating, long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Austria

Until my first winemaking lecturer talked about drinking yourself sober with Austrian wine, I never thought about Austria in any sense. When she wrote the words ‘Gruner Veltliner’ on the top of my notebook, my fate was sealed. Further study (that does include drinking) opened me up to the world of their two standout whites: Riesling and Gruner Veltliner. Later came the reds made from Zweigelt, Sankt Laurent, and Blaufrankisch, but for me, the thrill is still the racy, mineral, hauntingly perfumed whites that age as gracefully as any in the wine world.

But what does this mean for you? As a lover of Riesling and aromatic whites, these wines are in your zone. As a lover of aged White Burgundy, then aged Gruner Veltliner is definitely for you. The greatest characteristic that Austrian wines offer you as a wine lover is that they are accessible. When you open a beautiful bottle of Austrian white or red, they offer flavours you are familiar and comfortable with.

Kamptal

Named for the river Kamp that flows through the region and featuring Austria’s largest wine-producing town, Langenlois. Kamptal is 3802ha dedicated to the Niederosterreich (Low Austria) specialties Riesling and Grüner.

Grüner Veltliner

The jewel in the crown of Austria. Grüner Veltliner wines are reminiscent of Riesling but often with more density, less overt perfume and more spice. Ages well and becomes a reasonable facsimile of old White Burgundy. Makes up around 30% of the total vineyard area.

Wine

Wine is the result you get from fermented grape juice. There is proof of wine production dating back 8000 years ago. Fashions, innovations and many other factors have influenced the way wine has evolved over the years.

The wine grape is impressive. It contains everything you need to make grape wine except for the yeast, which lives on the outside of the skins.

Human inputs can influence the final product, including the viticulture (growing) choices. And the winemaker can shape the wine to a point too.

The best wines of the world often refer to terroir. Terroir is a French term that refers to all the climatic, geological and topographical influences on a specific piece of land. And it is true that neighbouring vineyards, grown identically, can taste noticeably different.

White Wine

It is interesting to know that you can make white wine from almost any grape. The colour comes from the skins, and if there is no contact, there is no colour. White wines tend to be delicate, perfumed, higher in acid and lower in alcohol. It seems for this and many other reasons, it is hard to make an incredibly impressive white wine. But those that have mastered the art are indeed some of the best winemakers in the world.

It is a falsehood to think that white wine does not age as well as red wine. But it is correct that white wine, as a rule, doesn’t age for as long.
