Description

After stints as being a Sommelier in Adelaide and London, Damon Nagel came back to South Australia and purchased a property in the Adelaide Hills that became the Brackenwood vineyard. Located within the Hope Forest, nestled high in the sub-region of Kuitpo. The property is set in the most southern section of the Hills and was once a deer farm. The Vineyard is biodynamic and all fruit is Estate grown.

A unique blend that shows scents of cherry and spice. Great mouthfeel and texture with gentle sweet fruit and a clean, fresh finish.

Brackenwood has crafted a beautifully light, fresh and vibrant light red. Showing cherry and red fruits, and floral notes with some pepper and cardamom. The palate offers a lovely silkiness and is very refreshing. Perfect for sipping in the sun with a light chill but there is serious complexity for drinking. I’d serve this wine with BBQ prawns.

Adelaide Hills

This is a big and varied region that basically stretches from the top of the McLaren Vale all the way to the bottom of the Barossa. This means there is a big scope for climatic conditions. In the central part where its altitude is quite high, you can get some of the best sites in the world for Sparkling wine. In the slightly warmer parts of the centre, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme with Riesling, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc worthy of honourable mentions.

Gamay

Grown in the French regions of Beaujolais and Loire Valley. It is early budding, high cropping, aromatic and high acid. It was outlawed from Burgundy by Duke Philippe the Bold for being disloyal. But Gamay has no doubt made up for that with honourable service. The best wines from Gamay can be Burgundian in flavour and well worth seeking out. Often they are exceptionally good value too.

Pinot Noir

This is the most elusive grape. It is relatively early ripening and extremely sensitive to terroir. Its perfect place on earth is the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. So haunting are great red Burgundy’s charms that growers everywhere try to emulate them. Pinot Noir is not just a one trick pony, it can make great reds, rosé, sparkling and even sweet wines, whites on occasion and I’ve tasted a decent fortified Pinot Noir too. Adding body, perfume and richness to Champagne it also adds red berry and floral/rose petal notes along with spice and subtle layers.
