Description

For over 60 years the Castano family have been growing grapes in Yecla. Since 1980 they have also been making their own wines. They now have over 450 hectare devoted to native and international varieties. The most charming of their wines are made from Monastrell.

Showing all that is great about Monastrell (aka Mourvedre aka Mataro). Earth, tea, meat with blackberries and brambles. I think you’ll enjoy this. There is not a lot of subtlety and I think a simple, char grilled steak is still the best match. This will will definitely evolve over the next five years or so.

D.O Yecla – Due west from the town of Alicante on Spain’s East coast. There is a mix of native and international varieties grown here. But home town grape Monastrell is still the highlight. Higher altitude vineyards keep acidity while dry growing means concentration of flavours. That is a pretty mean combination for making high class wines. .

Monastrell – Also known as Mourvedre in France and Mataro in the new world. It is known for making a muscular, tannic, meaty, savoury wine. It is often the backbone of a blend but in places like Alicante, Jumilla and Yecla it is the major if not only variety in the red wine. Aging can vary depending on winemaker influence.
