Grown high up in the Andes Mountains in the prestigious Calchaqui Valley of Salta at 1750m above sea level. ‘Amalaya’ means hope in the language of the Indigenous Andes tribes. Made mostly of Torrontes which provides body and texture with a bit of Riesling adding aromatics and acidity. The wine shows citrus and mineral notes, with a silkiness and delicate mouth-feel.

‘Hope for a miracle’ or Amalaya in the indigenous language of the now extinct tribe, the Calchaquí. Now owned and run by the infamous Hess Family Wine Estate. However the same dedication to quality, sustainability is observed. With 80 hectares planted to Malbec, Torrontés, Riesling, Tannat, Petit Verdot, Bonarda, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot they have a good base to work from. There are three distinct vineyards that provide their grapes. ‘Finca Las Mercedes’ (with deep sandy soils); ‘Finca San Isidro’ (with rocky soils); and ‘Finca Amalaya’, which has fractured rocky soils and stones of varying sizes.

Service

One of the benefits of buying this wine is you can serve it icy cold and it becomes ultra refreshing. Or serve it at cellar temperature 16-18 degrees and you’ve got your self a complex and textural white wine.

Food Matches

Just about too many to list. Seafood, spicy, aromatic, white meats, shellfish. Keep a bottle in the fridge for those matches you can’t figure out.

Salta

This province lays claim to the highest vineyard in the world. Big diurnal temperature variations means these wines are elegant and high in acid. Great for Torrontés but the reds do very well if you like lots of structure.

Torrontes

DNA testing says this white grape (well there are three distinct Torrontés clones) is related to the Muscat family but is a variety in its own right. Fragrant, textural and a hint neutral in the best possible way. Makes a refreshing drink that is versatile for food matching.
